The sugar glider was brought to the USA for the exotic pet trade in the 1990s (Brust, 2009). The current size of the USA sugar glider population is unknown, but it makes up a proportion of the 3.5 million exotic mammalian pets kept in private households (excluding ferrets, rabbits and livestock) (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2018). A possum is a mammal, specifically a marsupial, that is nocturnal and arboreal (lives in trees). Some possums have a gliding membrane and are referred to as gliders. The largest of the possums in South-east Queensland is the Short-eared Possum, ( Trichosurus caninus) which may grow to about 4.5 kg. The smallest are the Feathertail Gliders Adult sugar gliders weigh between 4-5 ounces and usually measure around 12 inches from the nose to the tip of the tail. The tail is responsible for at least half of its length. These creatures are quite vocal and can bark somewhat like a small dog. When cared for properly, they can live in captivity for up to 15 years. Do reputable sugar glider breeders see their animals mate? Rarely. If any mating is seen, watch for bumps in her pouch over the next month, feed increased fat and calcium foods to support her lactation. If they're not part of a breeding program, keep separate until neuter even if she is pregnant. Adults are generally 6 to 8 inches in length and weigh between 4 and 6 ounces. They are one of the few mammals that have an opposable digit, like the human thumb, that helps them keep their grip. A Diet Full of Fruits, Veggies and Insects. Sugar gliders eat a variety of things in the wild, including plant material (eucalyptus gum), sap, nectar, pollen grains and insects. They will also eat bird eggs, lizards, small birds and other small prey items. This diet is challenging to replicate in captivity. Sugar Glider Breeding. Scientists are still studying the genes of sugar gliders to determine different species. Breeders routinely manipulate coat color genetics and do not breed certain colors that may produce variations of babies that do not thrive. For example, a subspecies of sugar gliders, called a caramel, can only be bred to other Sugar gliders start mating when they reach puberty, which is at a very young age. Females reach puberty at 8 to 12 months old, while males reach puberty at 12 to 15 months old. So, while we still don't know how to walk at the age of 12 months, sugar gliders reproduce at the same age. Description. The Sugar Gliders' fur is thick, soft, and is usually an ash-grey to brown-grey above, with a dark stripe that extends from the middle of the head to the mid-back region. The belly, throat and chest are cream in colour, and the bushy tail, which can average about 19cm, is darker and in some cases may have a white tip. Male sugar gliders typically weigh 100-160 grams and adult females weigh between 80-130 grams. Weights will vary among individuals and the different subspecies.
